Brian Coyle KantanMT

In our third post of the ‘5 Questions’ series, we are delighted to introduce you to Brian Coyle, Chief Commercial Officer at KantanMT. The ‘5 Questions’ is a series of interviews that aims to give you a deeper insight into the people at KantanMT.

1.What’s your role at KantanMT?

My role is to make it easier and faster for global brands to communicate with their cross-border customers and stakeholders. I help them make informed purchase decisions; and support them through the building and deployment of customised KantanMT engines.

2. What according to you is the most outstanding technology in KantanMT right now?

That’s a difficult question to answer because KantanMT is packed with incredible features. What I love showcasing to localization people is the range of customisation features on the KantanMT platform. One can customise KantanMT engines in a number of ways; such as uploading 4 types of training data, the ability to handle named entities and non-translateables, run-time glossaries and so on.

However, one of the features that is generating a lot of interest right now is KantanFleet, which of course is our set of domain and language pair specific pre-built Custom MT engines. Clients can use these to start their translation projects really quickly, as the engines are already built and ready to go.

3. What according to you is the least appreciated piece of automated translation technology?

One of the biggest problems with any translation project is inconsistency in the use of terminology. KantanMT handles glossary training data in a couple of different ways throughout the customisation process and it also allows users to load their own, brand specific run-time glossaries, which override the phrase table. These features are super effective in overcoming any issues with inconsistency, and are a real strength of the KantanMT platform.

4. What interests you the most in the world of automated translation?

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is a fascinating area and our own R&D team at KantanLabs is busy working on the development and adaptation of this technology for KantanMT.

My colleague Dr Dimitar Shterionov recently published an article titled ‘Translating with Cerebral Machines: Where Can It Take Us?’ on the TAUS blog, which I think is a great read for anyone interested in learning more about NMT.

5. If you could be any fictional character, who/ what would you be, and why?

Bilbo Baggins! Middle Earth is a pretty exciting place and the quest of good versus evil would keep me on my toes – plenty of exotic languages to deal with too!
