As a Dublin based company (and friends of Localization World) we were really excited to hear that the Localization World Conference was finally coming to our home town. So, we wanted to somehow get involved and show the conference attendees a bit of what makes Ireland so special! After talking with Ulrich and Donna from Localization World and throwing around a few ideas, we came up with the concept for Mountain Flag Challenge – a charity hike in the Wicklow Mountains that would see localization professionals and friends from around the world bring their company and/or country flags to the top of one of Leinster’s highest peaks.

Djouce, taken from the Irish word Dioghais is beautifully set in the Wicklow Mountains and offers stunning panoramas of Dublin’s coastline and surrounding landscapes. While tough at times, the hike is a manageable 13km and wouldn’t be too difficult for most people with a moderate level of fitness.

The event aims to raise money for Padraig Schaler, son of well-known localization academic and professional Reinhard Schaler. Padraig (also known as Patrick, Paddy, ‘Schaler’, and Big P!) was knocked off his bicycle as he cycled to work on Cape Cod in June 2013. He remained in a coma for over 8 months following the accident. After a few weeks in Cape Cod Hospital, his family brought him home to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital. Four months later, they decided to move him to a dedicated early neuro-rehab facility in Hamburg, Germany where he is currently receiving treatment. You can read more about Padraig’s story on the Caring for Padraig website, a group set up to manage donations made to help care for Padraig.

The KantanMT team has been training and trekking on Djouce a few times already in preparation for the event on June 7th. Here’s a sneak peak of what to expect on the day:

We’ve worked really hard to organize an enjoyable event that will create lasting memories of Ireland and hopefully start a few new friendships. A barbeque in a local coastal town following the event has been arranged where you can enjoy tasty food and refreshments in a relaxed environment. Localization World has kindly covered the cost of the food and also the transport to and from the hike.

Hiking’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and if it’s not your thing then why not look at it as a challenge that will wow your friends and help you prove something to yourself?
